PHOTO FUNNIES

The sources of humor can be discovered everywhere at any time by almost anyone when careful, thorough observations are made. Photo Funnies is a collection of natural, unaltered photographs from across the United States that were personally discovered and photographed by the author. The book shows the abundant frequency of “hidden” or subtle humor that surrounds us every day. The book is organized into relevant, overlapping, and interrelated chapters: obviousness, health, safety, education, and recreation. Each chapter reveals how these shared, common activities and places each of us frequently encounter every day can be sources of humor. After initially observing each photo, ask yourself, “What do I physically see and what is its intended purpose or meaning?” Then, after more careful examination, ask yourself, “How else can this be interpreted?” Look for anything and everything that is unusual, strange, or out of the ordinary, such as misspellings, inconsistencies, ambiguities, and contradictions. Create several of your own interpretations or captions for each photo before you view the author’s caption below each photo. You can become a discoverer of “hidden” or subtle humor by asking the above two questions all the time with everything you see. The chapter titled “Make Your Own” tests your new, sharpened power of observation by matching Photo Funnies with the author’s creative captions. The sources of humor are everywhere and can be discovered by almost anyone when careful, thorough observations are made.
